The Mission Pulicat aims to work with the communities in the Irukkam island to realize the Sustainable Development Goal Number 11, i.e., to create sustainable communities with focus on a just society providing equal access to resources; adequate, safe and affordable basic services like housing, health, education and transport. Sustainable livelihoods are a special focus to improve economy of the habitat and strengthen social and environmental links between urban, peri-urban and rural areas.
The Irukkam Island is a delicate ecosystem situated within the brackish water lake called Pulicat, in the Nellore District of Andhra Pradesh, India. The island has around 2000 people living in it. The Mission Pulicat builds entrepreneurial capacity among the people for their livelihoods, by training them in hospitality skills and facilitating home-stays for tourists and backpackers. We will set up a ‘Basic Life-Skills Academy’ to promote indigenous skills, knowledge and culture on minimalist living, cooking local cuisine, farming and fishing experience, camping, medicinal herbs, handicrafts, etc.
This initiative will mediate between tourists and the local people to promote zero-waste tourism, without disturbing the natural and fragile areas of Irukkam Island thus empowering the local people to be strong guardians of their resources.
